Upgrade and Jailbreak/Unlock your iPhone 2G/3G
Posted by Watson on Tuesday Mar 24, 2009 Under Tips
As all of us know that, there are no “Official unlock” iPhone in Malaysia from any of our Mobile Service Provider until Mid of March 2009 (Maxis come out plan for iPhone 3G by mid of March 2009, you can get it with Holy High price).
For those who get their iPhone 2G or 3G from whatever way and use them in Malaysia, normally is Jailbreak set.
What do we mean Jailbreak? iPhone, by default, is locked to one of the Mobile Service Provider, like AT&T. You can only use AT&T simcard and service if you go through the “normal” way. It will NOT work on Maxis, Digi, or Celcom.
So, how do we enable an iPhone in Malaysia and use with our Local Mobile Service Provider? We jailbreak and unlock the iPhone.
Before you continue, please read this carefully! One step wrong will brick your iPhone and make it no more usable! Do it at your OWN RISK!!!
If you found yourself confuse with what I write here, please DO NOT continue to do the job yourself. Find someone who can know this, or better still, pay someone to do the job for you, so that you DO NOT brick (brick in iPhone term, means you corrupted the firmware and even baseband, and the phone is NO MORE bootable) your iPhone!!!
You will need following files. Download it before you start is recommanded:
If you have iPhone 2G, get these:
- Download QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows here!
- Downlaod .NET Framework 1.x here!
- Downlaod .NET Framework 2.x here!
- Download BootLoader File: BL-39.bin
- Download BootLoader File: BL-46.bin
- Download Firmware: iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw
- Download Firmware: iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw
If you have iPhone 3G, get these:
- Download QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows here!
- Downlaod .NET Framework 1.x here!
- Downlaod .NET Framework 2.x here!
- Download Firmware: iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw
- Download Firmware: iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw (Not unlockable yet! Read carefully before proceed!)
*** WARNING!!! Please note that as of today 23rd March 2009, yellowsn0w is not release the unlock for Firmware 2.2.1 Baseband 2.30.03for iPhone 3G yet. So DO NOT upgrade your iPhone 3G to Firmware 2.2.1 unless you know what you are doing (I would like to know too if you have a way to overcome this.). iPhone 2G is not affected by this warning.
*** WARNING!!! Please note that flushing Firmware will erase EVERYTHING in your iPhone, no matter it’s Contact, Calender, SMS, Photos, Songs, Ringtones… I mean EVERYTHING. Please do backup before continue!
OK, I assume you are having a working iPhone 2G or 3G at this stage. And you already have all the files downloaded.
Now, connect your iPhone into computer with the USB cable. Go to your iTunes, iTune should always tell you there is a newer version of Firmware is available. Now press Shift Key + Mouse Click on the Restore button, this step is VERY danger and important. It should prompt you an dialog box to look for the ipsw file (If it is not, stop your iTunes immediately and unplug your iPhone, do it as fast as possible!). Open the ipsw file that you downloaded at the beginning as I told you. For iPhone 2G, you may go for 2.2.1. BUT for iPhone 3G, please choose 2.2 (read my WARNING carefully). Click to continue the restoration.
After the restoration complete, it will show you the screen that you have miss for so long, the default screen when you first get your new iPhone.

In-order for you to continue from this point, is to Jailbreak it. There might be lots of ways out there which can do the Jailbreak, I am sharing ONE of it here. QuickPwn! Install the software and .NET Framework 1.x and 2.x into your computer before you proceed next steps (btw, the software need .NET Framework 1.x or 2.x, I am not sure, but it needs one of it to work. so Please install that as well, else you will get error when startup QuickPwn).
Run the software, connect your iPhone to your computer with the USB cable provided in the box, and following step by step as the software ask you to do. You will need the iPhone Firmware which match your iPhone, if you get youriPhone within these 2-3 months (23rd March 2009), then you might get Firmware 2.2 or 2.2.1. Download theFirmware in advance is a better way, else the download process will make you crazy for waiting since each of the ipswfile is about 250MB in size.
OK, now you get the Firmware, and you “open” it when QuickPwn asking for it, and QuickPwn give you a big green tick after a few second of checking, you are good to go for next step.
QuickPwn will ask you to press the HOME button for 5 seconds, then press the Power button on top of the iPhonetogether (both together, don’t release the HOME button) for 10 seconds, then release the Power button BUT continue pressing the HOME button for 30 seconds (normally the next action in QuickPwn will start when it reached ~21 – 18 seconds), iPhone will start showing you a Harddisk image, you may then release the HOME button. It will reboot itself and startup with a running Pineapple image with progress bar after the Harddisk image. Just sit back and relax.
*** IF you failed to follow the instruction asked by QuickPwn, reboot your iPhone and start the whole process again.
After iPhone restarted, you will see the lovely wallpaper with the “slideto unlock” slide bar, then you will see those sweet icons (sounds so…
). Don’t be too happy yet. You just done Jailbreak, BUT not yet unlock, means you may use your iPhone as iPod but not a phone yet. It still don’t know who the hell is Maxis, or Digi, or Celcom.
Now you need your home WiFi setup into iPhone so that it can go into internet and download the very famous unlocktool - yellowsn0w (Special thanks to DEV Team).
First, tab on Settings icon, then tab Wi-Fi. Tab on Other…, key in your WiFi SSID and choose the correct security method that suite your WiFi, then tab Join. You should see the wave simbol at the top left corner.
You need to launch your Cydia (look for the Cydia icon in iPhone and single Tab on it). The first time it will run a “Reorganizing” process and goes back to the “slide to unlock” screen. Go in and launch Cydia again. This time, it will ask “Who Are You?” just tab whatever you think you are (I am a Hacker! Hehehehe). Now, tab on the Search button on the right bottom. Type in “yellowsn0w” and search. Please note that the O in “snow” is actually zero.
Install the yellowsn0w. Reboot you iPhone (Press the Power button for 3-5 seconds, it will have a “slide to Power Off” screen comes out, slide to off it. Once it is off, put in your Maxis, or Digi, or Celcom simcard (if you don’t know how do put in the simcard, please refer to your iPhone user guide). Press the Power button until you see the screen on (3-5 seconds). After the white Apple logo, slide to unlock the phone, now wait for 3 – 5 minutes. You should be getting the ISP name showing on the left top of the iPhone. Now your iPhone is a life. Congratulation.
BTW, if after you done all these and you DO NOT get your simcard recognized after 5 – 10 minutes, most properly is because:
1) Your iPhone 3G is with Firmware 2.2.1 and Baseband 2.30.03, which yellowsn0w is not supported.
or
2) Your Simcard with simcard pin code, which yellowsn0w is not supported.
or
3) You done something wrong in the middle.
Double check your Firmware version and Baseband version by go into Settings, General, About. If it is really the (1)case, then sorry, as of the date 23rd March 2009, yellowsn0w is not having solution to unlock baseband 2.30.03 on iPhone 3G yet. All you can do, is either wait for yellowsn0w, or get a RebelSimcard/TurboSimcard/XSimcard or whatever addon simcard at LowYat Plaza’s handphone shops, which cost you some hundred bugs (Please note that these addon simcards DO has some problems, choose this and you need to take the risk).
If it is (2), then easy, remove the simcard pin code using your old phone and put back into iPhone and reboot it. It will be all right now.
If it is (3), then even easy, redo the whole process carefully this time and it will do the trick.
Thank you for your time to read on this.

I recently bought an iPhone using the Maxis plan.
Is it a good idea, or bad, to jailbreak it?
The custom themes and other added stuff not included with the official unlocked version seem very tempting…
March 29th, 2009 at 7:24 am
Hi Fadz, personally I dont suggest you jailbreak/unlock it until it work for firmware 2.2.1 or 3.0.
March 29th, 2009 at 10:28 am
there already is a quickpwn 2.2.1.
http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/01/official-quickpwn-221-and-pwnagetool-jailbreak-for-windowsmac.html
So is it worth jailbreaking? Cydia seems uber.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:58 am
Hi Fadz,
Please double check on the service agreement on your contract with Maxis first. I think if you jailbreak your Maxis iPhone, you might void the warranty with them.
QuickPwn version is not match to the iPhone Firmware version, Please do not confuse on this.

Hi Fudg,
The error 1301 reported from iTune is normal when u do an downgrade from Firmware 2.2.1 to Firmware 2.2. It is not consider an error anyway. All you need to do is just power off your iPhone and restart it again, then you will see the “connect to iTune” screen. Then you may continue from there.
April 5th, 2009 at 12:41 am
thnx Watson. But I thought we got to have the “emergency call” screen first before we can use the quickpwn?
. Pls help me
All I get is the cable n iTunes pic
April 6th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Hi Fudg,
You will only get the “emergency call” screen after you jailbreak and “slide to unlock”. You can do the jailbreak when you see the “connect to iTune” screen.

can someone help? I have a locked iphone 3g. I updated it to 2.2.1 and now the phone is locked. What do i do? The phone is useless unless i use a turbo sim? Can anyone out there help?
April 20th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Hi Ernie,
You have 1 more chance before you try out the turbo sim.
http://www.blogsdna.com/2979/downgrade-iphone-baseband-from-23003-to-22800-with-phasebandowngrader.htm
This is a method to downgrade your firmware 2.2.1 baseband from 2.30.03 to 2.28.00, if this success, then you will not need turbo sim, yellowsn0w will work fine for you.
BUT!!!
This only work with bootloader version 5.8 and below (iPhone 3G out from factory before Sep 2008). If you have one of the iPhone which is running bootloader 5.9, or it come with firmware 2.2.1, then this is NOT for you.
Try this. This is the last chance. If it doesn’t work for you, then you can only hope turbo sim work for you.
Thank you.

hi need help how to update iphone version in 2g
May 25th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Hi ritesh,
Same procedure as iPhone 3G. Just make sure you download the correct firmware.
One thing you will be happy, iPhone 2G do not need to worry about unlocking.
May 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Have anyone jailbreak the iphone 3G(from Maxis) successfully? Wanna Cydia so much …
May 29th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
Hi Kenloke,
I don’t think there is any problem to jailbreak the Maxis’s iPhone 3G, except the warranty no more.
June 10th, 2009 at 2:30 am
Hi Watson & Kenloke,
Jailbreaking is only a software & it will never be detected as long as you “Restore” it from itune. Therefore, apple will never find out that your phone is jailbreak…. & the warranty will still be there. If a iphone is not jailbroken, then why want to buy a iPhone instead of a itouch. Release the magical power of iphone & you will see the wonders of the jailbreaking system.

Hi,
I got my iphone 3G with ver 2.0 and modem firmware 1.45 I cannot use all the cool features of this phone since it is not jailbreak yet. My cousin bought it for me from Singapore last year.
Can I use the same procedure you mentioned in this link to jailbreak mine. Will it work?
It does need a matching firmware version??
June 25th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
When I click iTunes, a message popup says “Cannot Connect to the iTunes Store. The iTunes Store is not supported in this country.”
I cannot download anything on my iphone right now.
June 25th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
Hi Nor,
Yes, you can follow the steps to upgrade and jailbreak + unlock your iPhone 3G. Every single iPhone 3G is able to upgrade to firmware 3.0 with no problem. The problem will be whether you can get back your Mobile Service Provider Connection without unlock or not.
June 25th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Hi Nor,
Looks like your computer or iPhone’s country set to somewhere else which is not Malaysia. Try check that setting and correct it and try sync with iTune again.
Thank you.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Hi, I haven’t done anything yet on my iPhone. And I am using Maxis 3G data packet service. With this steps the firmware will be upgraded to 2.2 right?
/Nor
July 4th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Hi Nor,
Sorry for late reply, if you try to upgrade now, you will end up on 3.0. Since iTune will get the latest firmware for you. Unless you press shift+restore button when you restore and choose the 2.2 ipsw file you downloaded from internet.
August 16th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Hi
i got iphone from UK is O2 provider.and now at version 2.2.1
anyone know how to jailbreak and unlock it?
pls help
thanks
August 17th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Hi Sam,
iPhone version 2.2.1 is not possible to do software unlock (you can jailbreak, but not unlock). You need Turbosim or Rebelsim or whatever addon sim that said they can unlock 2.2.1.
But, a better solution for you is to upgrade your iPhone to 3.0 or 3.0.1 so that you can software unlock it.
Thank you.

October 22nd, 2009 at 11:01 am
i just bought my iphone 3gs through Maxis two weeks ago..i upgraded the OS to 3.1.2 is there a jailbreak for this OS?
November 10th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Hi Eugene,
You may refer to this article: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/232020146/baseband-reprieve
Basically you are now able to unlock you 3.1.2 using this: http://blackra1n.com
The article is like below:
iPhone 3G/3GS owners who found themselves stuck with version 05.11 of the baseband (either by accident or because they bought it that way) are now in luck! geohot was able to turn the already-public at+xemn crash into an injection vector, which can be used to inject his version of the unlock. The blacksn0w unlock is available for free via Cydia by adding the repository http://blackra1n.com in the Manage->Sources panel. Congratulations, geohot!
Those of you who are already unlocked at 3.1.2 because you kept your 04.26 baseband now have an extra cushion of comfort, and more choices: ultrasn0w, purplesn0w, and now blacksn0w (and of course the original yellowsn0w too if you’re still back at FW 2.x). Whether or not you choose to update your baseband solely to use the new unlock is a personal choice, but so far there are no advantages to doing so (and remember you can’t come back to 04.26 after you’ve gone to 05.11).
As with all the unlocks, it will probably very soon be re-sold through scam sites that charge you money for what is offered to the community for free. Please stay vigilant for these scam sites and steer your friends away from them.
Update: Some commenters are reporting a lingering problem with WiFi while using blacksn0w. Some are able to solve it with a single “Reset Network Settings” but others say they need to do that periodically. So far there seems to be no pattern to those affected or the best way to fix it.
November 30th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
hye there,
i already buying my iphone 3gs form maxis, i’m still confius.. is it my iohone jailbrake already? if my iphone originally from maxis, why i don’t have cydia application on my iphone 3gs. please let me know…
November 30th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Hi Moga, your new iphone purchased from Maxis is original and no jailbreak. So that’s why no Cydia installed. If you jailbreak your iPhone, I believed your warranty with Maxis will be void. Please confirm with Maxis.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:17 am
I’m using iPhone 3G from Maxis (fw 3.1.2, baseband 05.11.07, Serial# XXX21XXXXXX).
I’ve tried jailbreaking with blackra1n RC3, but unsuccessful. Blackra1n just hung at a screen that says “Entering a Discovery Mode…”, and my iPhone stuck a a screen with iTunes logo with cable.
Everytime I got this, I need to recover back with iTunes which will reset back my iPhone to its original settings.
FYI, I’m running on Windows Vista SP2.
Anybody can help me to jailbreak my iPhone?

January 22nd, 2010 at 1:30 pm
Hi lee,
Your questions is a bit too wide… Hope following comments help:
Upgrade Firmware = Imagine you iPhone as a computer. Upgrade firmware is like upgrade Windows XP to Windows Vista on computer. It’s the reinstallation of iPhone OS.
Jailbreak = Default iPhone DO NOT allow you to install applications except you get it from iTune. Most of the application on iTune need to pay. So Jailbreak is a way to release this limitation to let you have flexibility to install application from 3rd party installer or/and web sites.
Unlock = Default iPhone can only run on ONE service provider (ex: Maxis). For those who not getting their iPhone from Maxis, we got them from oversea. It could be a locked set (lock for a service provider in that country), or unlock set (global unlock set, can use with any service providers freely). In-order for us to use the lock set with Maxis/Digi/Celcom, which is not the default service provider, we need a way to unlock it. That’s what we mean “unlock” here.
Hope these answer your questions.

may i noe de i phone buy from maxis can jailbreak or not ??
cause have ppl say if jailbreak den cant turn off de phone if not it will unlock……!!
it’s true ??
pls repply me as fast as soon ^^
January 29th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
Hi wong yong hui,
There is no such thing as what you mention. Once you jailbreak & unlock the phone, it will stay forever, unless you restore / upgrade the firmware.
Maxis iPhone is also iPhone
so it can be jailbreak. It do not required unlock since it should be global unlock set.
But. Once you jailbreak you might lost your iPhone warranty or something. Check with Maxis for details. (Well, you can still restore back the original firmware before you go Maxis to claim warranty
)
Thank you.
January 29th, 2010 at 1:43 pm
Hi lee,
Sorry for the late reply.
1) To check your iPhone firmware version, goto Settings / General / About, it show as “Version” in the list. Or easier way, dock ur iPhone into a pc with iTune installed. It will show in iTune iPhone page.
2) No better, every version have only 1 way to jailbreak, you choose the version and then you have to go for the only way for that version to jailbreak it.
3) If you mean more software, you may visit http://sw.sj.91.com/?app=soft&controller=iphone&action=index. But before that, you need this software installed on your pc: http://dl.sj.91.com/pcsuite/91assistant.exe.
Enjoy!

hi watson…
I just buy DVD app/games/software for Iphone.. how to install it..
must need to jailbreak Iphone first?…or not?…
thank u very much…
February 5th, 2010 at 5:19 pm
Hi wong yong hui,
That’s not the case. You can turn off and on anytime and it works just fine.
For unlock, if you are using hardware sim to unlock, then you may face problem after you restart, since the hardware sim not stable at all. But even you don’t restart the iPhone, there is also possibility that you lost signal and failed to get back your line in some low signal area (ex. inside lif).
I suggest you go for software unlock. Free of charge + stable. Don’t go for hardware unlock.
Thank you.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
Hi lee,
May I know what extension of the application you have in the DVD? That determine how you install the application.
Thank you.

After copy, you may then install it from iTunes.
Thank you.

please help to solve this problem…
One thing, some time my Iphone cannot restore, because apple do not accept my Iphone..
You can turn off and on anytime and it works just fine
February 12th, 2010 at 11:42 am
Hi lee,
Turn off the phone will need to restore firmware? This looks like hardware problem to me. The flash memory that keep the firmware is not able to keep permanently.
If it is still not possible for you to keep the jailbreak, you may look for help from some of the iPhone repair service shop.
Thank you.

Hi lee,
1) Download blacksn0w RC3 from here.
