Tips: How to Disable 3G/Edge on iPhone
Posted by Watson on Wednesday Apr 1, 2009 Under Tips
As mention in previous post:
“Maxis 3G/EDGE/GPRS Charge is Expensive!!!“
I found a way to disable the 3G or/and EDGE on your iPhone. You can enable it anytime you like if you need it.
Try out this application: BossPrefs
(You may get it from Cydia for FREE.)
You can use this application to
- Disable/Enable 3G (Disable this to save you tons of money)
- Disable/Enable EDGE (Disable this to save you tons of money, since it charged the same rate as 3G)
- Disable/Enable WiFi (Any reason we need to do this? As far as I know, NO.)
- Disable/Enable Bluetooth (Good feature, why should I disable it?)

BossPrefs also has other useful features (tab on the More button on top) like:
-Fix User Dir Permissions (This will help to solve some application crash problem)
- Show Free Disk Space (To check your iPhone’s free space without go into iTune)
- Enable Numeric Battery (Show percentage of available battery instead of the green battry icon)
And, BossPrefs has shortcut to:
- Respring (restart the GUI of iPhone)
- Reboot
- Shutdown
Your iPhone (just tab on the Power Button on the bottom of the screen and you will get the menu).
I do feel this is a VERY useful tool. Let’s give it a try and see how good it is.
Thank you for reading.

hi sidphaze,
Maxis package for iphone 3g included data transfer from 500MB to 3GB depence on the package you choose. As long as you don’t exceed the rate, you will not get extra charge.

hi nye79,
Well, thay are. If you are not getting the unlimited package, try to off the GPRS/EDGE and 3G so you wouldn’t get charge for unknown usage. There are an apps called “SBSettings” in Cydia that can do this for iPhone 2.2.1 and Phone 3.0.
Good luck.

Thank you for sharing. I found this app really useful. when i use maxis as network provider i use app call iphonenodata (http://iphonenodata.com) to disable the data connection but it doesn’t work on celcom. Now it works after install BossPref for celcom.

Hi,
I have a 2G iPhone and faced with horrendous ‘Edge’ charges on a PAYG sim I installed the sbsettings from Cydia and turned off Edge and 3G.
Unfortunately, repeated ‘balance checks’ with my provider showed my credit going down?
Now I don’t quite understand how this can happen.
If anyone could explain it would be appreciated. The only way I could stop it was deleting the mail app [process] via the Sbsettings ‘Processes’ function. But, if Edge & 3G are off, why do I have to do this?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards, Russ

Further to my previous post, I contacted the sim provider ad asked them to turn off EDGE/3G for my sim card and they did.

Hi everyone, I am using my iPhone 3G 3.1.2 on my Celcom line. I’ve tried iphonenodata and also Fake APN but both also doesn’t stop 3G/Edge on my phone. Is there any way to do this for Celcom?. I tried on Digi the iphonenodata method and it works fine but not for Celcom.
Thanks.

y need to turn off edge..edge is the network connection for the phone..
for iphone 2g user juz make sure fetch new data (go to setting) is turn off…if its turn on then any apps which been configured to fetch new data( e.g: new email. notification from facebook etc) will fetch or push new data onto the phone which result extra charges by telco company (will be quite expensive if iphone using edge, not 3g data plan)
for iphone 3g user same approach juz make sure push(check in setting) is off if not using internet or browsing via 3g data plan or wifi.
