On 17th March 2009, Apple announced that iPhone 3.0 is coming soon.
The next day when I go into office, almost everyone I met, were chatting on the new iPhone3.0. And then one of them come and ask me: “Hey, still playing your iPhone3G? iPhone 3.0 is coming lor…”. I was like: “HA!!???”.
Ok, to make it clear, iPhone 3.0 that Apple annource on 17th March 2009, is a new Firmware version. It is not a new Hardware, not a new model of iPhone. It is just an upgrade to the current Firmware version 2.2.1.
The thing that make it so LOUD, is because of the new features that it include:
-) MMS Application will be there.
-) Bluetooth is now supports stereo Bluetooth Headsets.
-) You can now connect iPhone beside you to play a network game.
-) Cut, Copy and Paste features are added in.
-) Spotlight Search which can search everything on your iPhone by keywords.
-) GPS Apps is now support navigation guide with voice.
-) Push Notification, which intent to replace the backgrounding apps solution.
-) Apps Developers can put in online purchase direct in their apps (Application upgrade?).
-) Allow accessory manufacturers write programs or drivers to talk to OS level.
Most of the features on applied on iPhone 3G. iPhone 2G can run this version of Firmware, however, some of the features will not work for it.
If you ask me, is this a huge changes? Any surprise from this announcement? I would say, NOTHING SPECIAL!
Most of the features that related to end users, are able to get from Cydia. My iPhone 3G already has almost all features that firmware 3.0 has. So, I am not so interest to get it to try out.
This Firmware, is benefiting those Apple iPhone Developers, a lot. Since it open a lot of possibility for they to come out more features applications, and, most important, open a huge high way for them to get more earning. Rather then benefit end users like us. Unless you are using the non jailbreak set.

Yes for sure, Apple will release their Firmware 3.0 for iPhone in June or July. But, I also heard a lot of rumors that there are new iPhone models will be launch by June or July 2009.
If you are considering getting an iPhone, and you can wait for 2-3 months, then I suggest you to wait and see. Unless you need it urgently, and you like the current model very much, and you think the current model is having everything that you want and you need. Then you may consider get one now. (Current model of iPhone 3G may be discontinue after the new model launch, just like iPhone 2G, the 1st Generation of iPhone.)
If you are considering by it’s features, it is not much difference on it’s hardware specification, or, I should say, there are a few (lot?) smartphone, PDA phone out there having more advances hardware then iPhone 3G has, now.
What I like it, is it’s OS (firmware) is very responsive, I seldom face lagging problem with iPhone, which I experienced in WM5 and WN6 all the time. (Time for apps launch is another thing. Don’t expect instant apps launch
)
I like the big screen, I like the net surfing speed, I like it’s applications sources which is so much easy to look for what I want. I like the WiFi Setting that is so much easy to use. I like the video graphic. I also like it’s ability to replace my game console. So much more to go…
BUT, what I like doesn’t means it’s your taste. You might need to hands on it to know it’s good.

hum, i dont think we are able to help you on this. There are some fake iphone that make in China (well, the original one also from China…), looks similar to iphone itself, are selling in Malaysia.
2 things to recommend you:
1) DO NOT get those that selling TOO cheap, mostly those are fake one. There is no way to sell it too cheap, unless it is stolen unit.
What do I mean cheap?
- iPhone 3G 8GB, standard selling price, would be more than RM2000.
- iPhone 3G 16GB, standard selling price, would be more then RM2200.
If someone selling you one that are around RM1k, you better becareful then.
2) If you have a friend who already has an iphone, bring him together, you will need his phone to compare with the one you are getting. Since those China brand looks so much similar, you will not able to notice the difference if you don’t have one before.

Hi adie,
iPhone 3G Location need Internet access to get your current location. Therefore, you either need to connected with WiFi or 3G before you can locate your self in Maps.

Hi Lyn,
iPhone firmware upgrade is always free no matter you get from which party, you just need to download the firmware and upgrade using iTune software.
But! Before you upgrade, please make sure you know what is the impact on the new firmware to your phone. Like, not unlockable?
So, please make sure you read more before you proceed with the upgrade.
